Medical Control

Effective:          08-31-24

Supersedes:      11-30-24

Policy

All EMTs shall be familiar with the process and criteria for contacting On-line Medical Control (OLMC) and the requirements for documenting such contact.  On-Line Medical Control refers to the EMT speaking directly with a qualified medical control physician via radio or telephone about the treatment and concerns relative to the patient the EMT is treating.

Procedure

EMTs shall contact On-line Medical Control whenever required to do so under the Emergency Medical Services Statewide Treatment protocols.  An EMT may also contact On-line Medical Control under any circumstance that the EMT feels requires guidance or input from a Medical Control Physician

On-Line Medical Control may be obtained by radio trough the appropriate C-Med or by telephone.   When obtained by telephone, On-line Medical Control contact should be over a recorded line.

Calling Medical Control does not replace the need to make entry notifications to the receiving facility for patients that require specialized resources.  All Medical Control contacts shall be documented on the Patient Care Report Form including physician name or ID number as well as any instructions / orders provided by Medical Control and the outcomes of those treatments.

Contacting Medical Control

Brewster and EasCare Ambulance Services maintain affiliation agreements with hospitals throughout our service area.

·         Units assigned to 9-1-1 municipal response should obtain on-line medical control from the designated primary affiliate hospital regardless of point of entry.

·         If OLMC is not available from the primary affiliate hospital, then medical control may be obtained from the receiving hospital so long as it has an affiliation agreement.  If the receiving facility does not have an affiliation agreement, the geographically closest affiliate hospital should be utilized for on-line medical control.
